Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI®)

A practical tool for understanding preferences, communication and team dynamics.

mbti management training for new managers

MBTI® is a widely used personality framework that helps people understand how they prefer to take in information, make decisions and organise their world. Used well, it gives teams a shared language for appreciating differences and working together more effectively.

What is the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI®)?

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI®) is a personality framework that describes preferences, not skills or ability. It looks at how people naturally prefer to:

  • Focus their attention and energy
  • Take in information
  • Make decisions
  • Approach structure and closure

These preferences combine into a four-letter type (such as ENTJ or ISFP) that provides a simple, accessible way to talk about similarities and differences in how people operate at work.

MBTI® is not about putting people in boxes. It’s a starting point for conversations about how we can use our strengths, stretch outside our comfort zones and work more effectively with others.

Why MBTI® matters for teams and organisations

In fast-moving environments, misunderstandings often come from differences in style, not differences in intent. MBTI® helps make those differences visible and useful.

MBTI® can help teams and organisations to:

  • Build self-awareness – people see their own preferences more clearly and how these shape their behaviour at work.

  • Improve communication – teams understand why some people want detail while others look for the big picture, or why some want time to reflect while others prefer to talk things through.

  • Reduce friction and conflict – differences in style become something to work with, rather than something to blame.

  • Strengthen collaboration and trust – teams learn how to adapt to each other and play to collective strengths.

  • Support leadership and management development – managers use MBTI® insights to tailor their approach to different team members.

How the MBTI® process works

LSI® is designed to be straightforward for leaders and their stakeholders, while still creating rich insight.

1. Complete the MBTI® questionnaire

Participants complete an accredited MBTI® questionnaire online before the session. This generates an individual report with an initial “best fit” type.

2. Debrief and verify type

In a one-to-one or small-group debrief, we explore each person’s preferences, clarify what feels most natural and confirm their “best fit” MBTI® type.

3. Apply insights in workshops and coaching

Through workshops and coaching conversations, we connect MBTI® insights to day-to-day communication, decision-making, problem-solving and leadership.

What MBTI® shows you

You can pair this with an icon or simple graphic of the four preference pairs.

MBTI® describes preferences across four pairs of opposites:

  • Extraversion (E) – Introversion (I)
Where you prefer to focus your attention and get your energy – from the outer world of people and activity, or the inner world of ideas and reflection.

  • Sensing (S) – Intuition (N)
How you prefer to take in information – by focusing on concrete facts and details, or patterns, possibilities and the big picture.

  • Thinking (T) – Feeling (F)
How you prefer to make decisions – by stepping back to look at logic and consistency, or by considering values, people and impact on relationships.

  • Judging (J) – Perceiving (P)
How you prefer to approach structure – with more planning and closure, or with more flexibility and openness to new information.

Knowing your type doesn’t tell you what you can or can’t do. It helps you understand your natural starting point – and how to stretch when situations or other people need something different from you.

How MetaPeople uses MBTI® with managers and teams

At MetaPeople, LSI® is not a stand-alone report – it’s a foundation for real development work.

Executive and performance coaching

We use MBTI® as one lens in one-to-one coaching with managers and leaders. It helps make sense of communication patterns, decision-making styles and how leaders relate to different types in their teams.

Management development programs

MBTI® can be integrated into management development journeys such as GrowingSuccess. Participants use type insights to understand their management style and how to adapt it to different people and situations.

TeamSuccess and MBTI® team workshops

We use MBTI® as the foundation for TeamSuccess and other team workshops that focus on communication, collaboration and trust. Teams explore their type mix, typical strengths and blind spots, and practical ways of working better together.

Workshops and programs that use MBTI®

Here’s how we use MBTI® in workshops and programs to turn insight into practical changes in how people communicate, collaborate and lead.

We typically use MBTI® in three ways:

  • As a standalone team workshop focused on communication and collaboration

  • As a module within management development programs such as GrowingSuccess

  • As part of one-to-one coaching for managers and leaders who want to better understand their style and impact

Who this is for

Teams that want to improve communication and reduce day-to-day friction

Managers who want to better understand and adapt to different working styles

New or emerging leaders building their approach to managing others

Cross-functional groups that need to collaborate more effectively

MBTI® Team Development / TeamSuccess Workshop

The MBTI® TeamSuccess Workshop combines individual type insights with a practical, team-based session. Participants confirm their MBTI® type, explore the team’s overall type pattern and identify concrete ways to work together more effectively.

  • Pre-work: Participants complete the MBTI® questionnaire online.

  • Type debrief: Individual or small-group debriefs to confirm best-fit type.

  • Team workshop: A half-day or full-day session where the team maps its type mix, explores strengths and blind spots, and agrees practical actions.

  • Optional follow-up: Additional team sessions or coaching to embed new ways of working.

Frequently asked questions about MBTI®

Here are some of the common questions organisations ask when they’re considering MBTI® for their managers and teams.

FAQ 1: Is MBTI® a test?
No. MBTI® is not a test and there are no right or wrong types. It describes preferences – the ways of working that feel most natural – rather than ability or competence.

FAQ 2: How long does the MBTI® process take?
Completing the questionnaire usually takes around 20–30 minutes. Debriefs and workshops can be tailored, but most teams complete the process over a half-day or full-day session, plus any follow-up coaching.

FAQ 3: Can MBTI® workshops be delivered online?
Yes. MBTI® debriefs and team workshops can be delivered in person or online. For teams dealing with sensitive issues or low trust, we’ll recommend the format that best supports open, constructive conversation.

FAQ 4: Is MBTI® suitable for all levels of the organisation?
Yes. MBTI® works well with individual contributors, first-line managers, middle managers and senior leaders. The content and examples are tailored to the level and context of the group.

FAQ 5: How is MBTI® different from tools like LSI®?
MBTI® focuses on preferences – how people like to operate. LSI® focuses on behavioural styles and the impact of behaviour on performance and culture. Used together, they give a fuller picture of how leaders prefer to work and how they are experienced by others.
